Civil Litigation, Employment, Intellectual Property, Appeals
Tory Griffin has extensive experience in all aspects of civil litigation in state and federal courts, both at the trial and appellate levels, as well as in administrative proceedings. Tory serves as lead trial and appellate counsel for clients ranging from fortune 500 companies to small to mid-size companies, public entities and individuals.
Tory spent the 16 years prior to joining Jeppson & Griffin with Downey Brand LLP, where he was a partner from 2003 through 2014. Tory’s litigation practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, intellectual property litigation, real estate litigation, and employment litigation. He has served as lead trial counsel in breach of contract actions, partnership disputes and shareholder derivative actions, cases involving alleged misappropriation of trade secrets and unfair competition, commercial real estate disputes, employment discrimination and harassment disputes, and copyright and trademark infringement actions, just to name a few. Tory serves as lead counsel for both public entities and private clients. In 2017, after a seven week trial in Placer County, Tory obtained a decision in favor of his clients to the tune of over $15 million in damages in an action for breach of fiduciary duty.
Tory’s clients also routinely trust him to act as lead counsel on appeal. Tory has handled dozens of writs and appeals before appellate courts throughout California. He has served as lead counsel and argued complex matters before the California Supreme Court, the California Court of appeal, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Utah Supreme Court.
In the administrative litigation arena, Tory has represented major gaming companies, leading telecommunications providers, hospitals, software manufacturers, and other entities in bid protest proceedings and other government contract disputes. He has also represented numerous individuals in professional license disciplinary hearings before several California agencies, including but not limited to the Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, Board of Real Estate, Medical Board of California, and Department of Consumer Affairs.
Tory also advises clients on transactional issues, and recently negotiated on behalf of his long-time client a monumental ground lease that allows the Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows ski resorts to connect via a base-to-base gondola through his client’s property.
In 2004, he served as the President of the Federal Bar Association, Sacramento chapter. After graduating first in his class at the University of Oregon School of Law, Tory started his career as a law clerk to the Honorable William B. Shubb, United States District Judge for the Eastern District Of California.
When not working, Tory enjoys spending time with his three kids, playing golf with friends, out on the lake on his paddleboard, traveling, and photography.
